Well qualified, though, is not the same as obvious, and Cook’s name appears not to have been coupled with the voyage until shortly before he was due return to Newfoundland in the spring of 1768. In fact, the appointment of a commander for the imminent Pacific voyage was a saga of poor communication, misunderstandings, self-promotion and dashed hopes.
